It is usually a turbo actuator problem. As far as I can tell, the 1.6TDCI has a vacuum operated actuator, with no position feedback. (The 2.0TDCI & 1.8TDCI both have actuator position sensors).

Hi, I have a 2008 Ford Focus 1.6 Tdci, when I was leaving the garage yesterday after filling up the red engine malfunction light came on on the dash. The car is driving perfect, no limp mode or funny engine noises. A mate has an OBD scanner and it showed no fault codes when attached.
The problem is, even from new, the DV6TED4 engine had a inherent design fault which caused premature turbo failure & worse, so if you're really fortunate the previous owner ''fixed'' the issue with various mods & was OCD with servicing - or you're taking a huge & potentially expensive risk with this engine. 1.

I'm getting around 36 mpg (UK) local driving and 47 on the long journey, both measured brim to brim, not the mpg display. My old 2006 Mondeo (2.0 Tdci also, and bigger, heavier car) would have given me 42 and 50+ in the same circumstances. Honest John Real MPG suggests an average of 46 mpg for the engine, so it's well below that.

Common rail diesels definitely tend not to like dirty/partially clogged old filters, I can always tell the difference on my 1.8 TDCi when I've replaced the fuel filter (thankfully on my engine it's only £7 for a good filter i.e. Bosch, the father in law nearly passed out when he had to pay £60+ for the fuel filter for a DV6 engine on the MK2
I have a 2011 Ford Focus 1.6 tdci sport , driving n all of a sudden the engine malfunction light has came on, it looses power - won’t go over 3k revs - any suggestions as to what the problem is & also if safe to continue driving for appx 15miles to home / garage ? Ford Focus 2008 - Engine Malfunction message just won't go away. Last week I had the message 'Engine Malfunction' come up on my dash, but the engine icon wasn't illuminated and the car drove fine. Having called the AA they pinned it down to a faulty emissions additive tank level sensor, which he found was now working again, then cleared the Hi my girlfriends focus is acting up again its a 2010 1.6 tdci while driving engine malfunction comes up on the dash then 3 seconds later the car stalls then may or may not restart. I have had it with 2 mechanics for a week each first one said he thinks its a sensor overheating but could not say which one.
